The 3rd Turkish Olympiad Southeastern US was held in Ferst Center for the Arts at Georgia Tech in Atlanta Georgia by the Istanbul Center on Saturday, March 19, 2010.The winners of singing, poetry recitation, general knowledge and proficiency in Turkish Language and Writing category will represent Southern U.S. at the 8th World Turkish Olympiads in Turkey.

Istanbul Center is a unit of Global Spectrum Foundation, Inc., is a 501(c)3 non-profit, non-governmental and non-partisan organization that was established in 2002. It promotes better understanding and closer relations between individuals and communities, building bridges between the Turkish, American and other communities in Atlanta and the Southeastern United States.

Turkish as a Native Language for Teens (TNL-T)

 Proficiency in Turkish Language and Writing Competition

 

Definition: A competition where contestants are judged on their Turkish Language skills and writing in Turkish.

 

Eligibility Requirements:

Students who have spent the last 5 years in the USA and are native Turkish speakers can participate

Middle or high school students of ages 12-16.

Students who attended the International Turkish Olympiads in earlier years are not eligible.

Students who are ranked in the top 60% in the Turkish Language Proficiency test may proceed to the writing section.

 

Criteria:

30% Proficiency in Turkish Language Test Result

70% Writing: An essay not exceeding 600 words in a familiar topic. Writing conventions, correct grammatical usage as well as writing style will be evaluated.

 

Awards:

1st           place: Participation in the International Turkish Olympiads in Turkey.

Traditionally participants are awarded about $500 by the International Olympiad Organization.

2nd          place: $200

3rd           place: $150

Turkish as a Native Language for Teens (TNL-T)

Poetry Recitation Competition

 

Definition: A competition where contestants are judged on their recitation performance in Turkish. 

 

Eligibility Requirements:

Middle or high school students of ages 12-16.

Students who attended the International Turkish Olympiads in earlier years are not eligible.

Students who have spent the last 5 years in the USA and are native Turkish speakers can participate

 

Deadline and Procedures:

Participants must provide a high-quality recording of his/her background music on or before February 26th, 2010 via email or CD.

 

Judging Criteria:

20% Memorization: To recite the lines of the poem without a mistake.

20% Confidence with the poem: Understanding the poem and reading it confidently.

40% Pronunciation: Intonation, Articulation, Stress.

20% Stage Performance: This is the reader’s attitude, gestures, facial expressions, and how he/she moves on the stage.

 

Awards:

1st           place: Participation in the International Turkish Olympiads in Turkey.

Traditionally participants are awarded about $500 by the International Olympiad Organization.

2nd          place: $200

3rd           place: $150

 

General Knowledge (TNL-T)

General Knowledge Competition

 

Definition:  A competition where contestants are judged on their knowledge of Geography, History, Literature, and Culture of Turkey.

 

Eligibility Requirements:

Students who have spent the last 5 years in the USA and are native Turkish speakers can participate

Middle or high school students of ages 12-16.

Students who attended the International Turkish Olympiads in earlier years are not eligible.

 

Criteria:

30% Proficiency in Turkish Language Test Result

70% General Knowledge Test: Multiple choice questions based on the question bank that will be published on January 15th, 2010 at the website.

 

Awards:

1st           place: Participation in the International Turkish Olympiads in Turkey.

Traditionally participants are awarded about $500 by the International Olympiad Organization.

2nd          place: $200

3rd           place: $150

 

Folk Dance Competition (TNL-T)

Turkish as a Native Language for Teens (TNL-T)

Folk Dance Competition

 

Definition: A competition where contestants are judged on their Turkish folk dance performance.

 

Requirements:

Middle or high school students of ages 11-16.

Participants should perform in groups of a minimum of three people.

The length of the performance cannot exceed 10 minutes.

Students who have spent the last 5 years in the USA and are native Turkish speakers can participate

 

 

Criteria:

30% Choreography: composition and arrangement of dance movements.

40% Harmony in the group: Harmony among group members in the movements.

30% Costumes: Originality and relation of the costumes to the folk dance.

 

Awards:

1st           place: $250 (Per individual)

2nd          place: $200 (Per individual)

3rd           place: $150 (Per individual)
