The 3rd Turkish Olympiad Southeastern US was held in Ferst Center for the Arts at Georgia Tech in Atlanta Georgia by the Istanbul Center on Saturday, March 19, 2010.The winners of singing, poetry recitation, general knowledge and proficiency in Turkish Language and Writing category will represent Southern U.S. at the 8th World Turkish Olympiads in Turkey.

Istanbul Center is a unit of Global Spectrum Foundation, Inc., is a 501(c)3 non-profit, non-governmental and non-partisan organization that was established in 2002. It promotes better understanding and closer relations between individuals and communities, building bridges between the Turkish, American and other communities in Atlanta and the Southeastern United States.

Turkish as a Foreign Language for Teens (TFL-T)

 State/City Promotion Exhibit

Definition: A competition where contestants are judged on how well the exhibit serves to promote the selected state/city.

 

Eligibility Requirements:

Middle or high school students of ages 11-18.

Maximum of three students if entering as a group.

Written content of the exhibit may be in Turkish or English.

 

Criteria:

35% Content: Extent of research made and depth of information presented.

35% Organization and clarity: The presentation should be clear, practiced and effective, with well-designed, relevant visuals and objects supporting the content.

30% Presentation: Students’ ability to respond to questions relative to the content in English.

 

Awards:

1st            place: $250 (Per Team)

2nd          place: $200 (Per Team)

3rd           place: $150 (Per Team)

 

Singing Competition

Turkish as a Foreign Language for Teens (TFL-T)

Singing Competition

 Definition: A competition where contestants are judged on their singing performance in Turkish.

 

 

Eligibility Requirements:

Middle or high school students of ages 11-16.

Students who attended the International Turkish Olympiads in earlier years are not eligible.

Passing Turkish Language proficiency exam with a score of 70% or higher.

 

Deadline and Procedures: 

Participants must provide a high-quality recording of his/her song’s original soundtrack on or before February 26th, 2010 via email or CD.

 

Judging Criteria:

20% Memorization: To recite the lyrics without a mistake.

20% Familiarity with the song: Understanding and expressiveness of the song.

40% Pronunciation: Intonation, Articulation, Stress.

20% Stage Performance: Attitude, gestures, facial expressions, and moves on the stage.

 

Awards

1st           place: Participation in the International Turkish Olympiads in Turkey.

Traditionally participants are awarded about $500 by the International Olympiad Organization.

2nd          place: $200

3rd           place: $150

 

Proficiency in Turkish Language Competition

Proficiency in Turkish Language Competition 

Definition: A competition where constantans are judged on their proficiency in the listening, reading, and grammar areas.

 

 

Eligibility Requirements:

Middle or high school students of ages 11-18.

Students who attended the International Turkish Olympiads in earlier years are not eligible.

 

Criteria: 

35% Listening: Multiple choice questions on a recorded passage in a familiar topic.

35% Reading: Multiple choice questions on short passages in familiar topics.

30% Grammar: Multiple choice questions in correct usage of language and main grammar rules.

 

Awards:

1st           place: $250

2nd          place: $200

3rd           place: $150

 

Poetry Recitation Competition

Poetry Recitation Competition 

Definition: A competition where contestants are judged on their recitation performance in Turkish.

 

 

Eligibility Requirements:

Middle or high school students of ages 11-16.

Students who attended the International Turkish Olympiads in earlier years are not eligible.

Passing Turkish Language proficiency exam with a score of 70% or higher.

 

Deadline and Procedures: 

Participants must provide a high-quality recording of his/her background music on or before February 26th, 2010 via email or CD.

 

Judging Criteria:

20% Memorization: To recite the lines of the poem without a mistake.

20% Confidence with the poem: Understanding the poem and reading it confidently.

40% Pronunciation: Intonation, Articulation, Stress.

20% Stage Performance: This is the reader’s attitude, gestures, facial expressions, and how he/she moves on the stage.

Folk Dance Competition

Turkish as a Foreign Language for Teens (TFL-T)

Folk Dance Competition:

 Definition: A competition where contestants are judged on their Turkish folk dance performance.

 

 

Eligibility Requirements:

Middle or high school students of ages 12-16.

Selected dance(s) must be performed by at a minimum of three students.

The length of the performance cannot exceed 10 minutes.

Passing Turkish Language proficiency exam with a score of 50% or higher.

 

Criteria:

30% Choreography: composition and arrangement of dance movements.

40% Harmony in the group: Harmony among group members in the movements.

30% Costumes: Originality and relation of the costumes to the folk dance.

 

Awards:

1st           place: Turkey trip for the actual performers in the competition. 

Turkey trip including airfare and all travel and accommodations in Turkey 

2nd          place: $200 (Per individual)

3rd           place: $150 (Per individual)

Conversation Competition

 

Definition: A competition where contestants are judged on their conversational skills in Turkish.

 

Eligibility Requirements:

Middle or high school students of ages 13-19.

Students who attended the International Turkish Olympiads in earlier years are not eligible.

Passing Turkish Language proficiency exam with a score of 70% or higher.

 

Judging Criteria:

50% Listening: Demonstrating an understanding of mini lectures or conversations that are listened to.

50% Speaking: To be able to talk about a familiar topic; To respond orally to posed questions. 

 

Awards:

1st           place: Participation in the International Turkish Olympiads in Turkey.

Traditionally participants are awarded about $500 by the International Olympiad Organization.
