Students, I commend you for investing time and energy learning the Turkish culture and language. Turkish is spoken by 250 million individuals, in Turkey and in many other countries, from Austria to Bulgaria, Denmark to Egypt, Germany to Honduras, and Romania to the United Kingdom.
On behalf of the Georgia Department of Education, I welcome you to Atlanta and to campus of Georgia Tech University an institution that strives to produce engineers and industrial managers with global competence, ready to compete and collaborate in the international marketplace.
Turkey is a crucial NATO ally of the United States and plays a key role in fostering dialogue between east and west. The Turkish culture is ancient and historical, reaching back to the Ottoman and Byzantine Empires. From the Library at Ephesus to the Göreme Valley, from Istanbul to Kayseri (Caesarea in Roman times), Turkey is also a cultural, visual and culinary delight. As one who has had the chance to travel to Turkey, dialogue with colleagues and meet new friends, I encourage you to continue your study of the Turkish language and culture, so that you can fully appreciate the beauty and importance of this lovely country.
Best regards,
Elizabeth Webb
